Baji Rao I (18 August 1700 – 28 April 1740), also known as Bajirao Ballal, was a renowned Maratha general and warrior who served as the second Peshwa (prime minister) of the Maratha Empire. He was appointed as Peshwa by his mentor, the first Peshwa, Bhatshah, and went on to become one of the greatest leaders in the history of the Maratha Empire.

Baji Rao I is known for his military campaigns which expanded the Maratha Empire's territory by defeating the Mughal Empire, the Nizam of Hyderabad, and other regional powers. His strategic genius and military tactics helped him win several battles against his enemies, including the Battle of Palkhed against the Nizam in 1728.

Apart from his military prowess, Baji Rao I was also a patron of the arts and architecture. He was responsible for the construction of several notable buildings, including the Shaniwar Wada in Pune, which was the seat of the Peshwas.

Baji Rao I died at the age of 39 due to fever and was succeeded by his son, Balaji Baji Rao. His legacy continues to inspire future generations of warriors and leaders in India.
